Is it legal to put songs I download from iTunes on other computers?

When you buy anything from the iTunes Store, you’re given a license to run that item on up to five different computers (and your iPod, naturally). To authorise a computer, you simply have to copy the file into iTunes and then try to play it. You’ll be asked to put in the Apple ID and password you used to buy the file, then it’ll play. There may be occasions when you need to deauthorise a computer – if you’re planning on selling it, for example. To do this, just go to the Advanced menu and click on ‘Deauthorize computer…’ and pick from the two options. With iTunes 7, you now have the ability to transfer songs bought through the iTunes Store to a new computer – as long as you have enough licenses, obviously. Start by connecting the iPod you want to transfer the songs from, start up iTunes and then go to File > Transfer Purchases from iPod.
