1 in 5 iPhones sold in France unlocked

Despite selling 30,000 iPhones in the first five days, Orange in France is less than happy that an estimated 20 per cent are not going through the company’s contract.

In France it’s possible to buy an iPhone either with a contract for 399 euros or without one for a whopping 749. From Orange’s own statistics, it would appear that around 24,000 new iPhone owners are buying the Orange one, while the remaining 6,000 people seem happier to spend the extra money to buy their freedom.

One thing that is unclear about the figure though, is exactly how many of the Orange iPhones were then activated and how many have been unlocked without Orange’s contract.
