Unlocked iPhones for sale in Germany

In a supreme case of sour grapes, Vodafone has taken T-Mobile to court in Germany and forced them to sell unlocked iPhones through their stores.
In a statement yesterday, T-Mobile conceded that they would be selling the iPhone without a T-Mobile contract, but German customers would have to pay a whopping 999 euros for the privilege.
It would appear that, having lost out on the contract to sell iPhones in Germany, Vodafone decided that, rather than simply admit defeat, they would have their revenge by taking T-Mobile to the courts, claiming that it’s illegal to sell the iPhone exclusively through one network – although it was quite happy to talk to Apple about doing just that.
Amazingly, it would appear that the German courts agree with Vodafone and a temporary injunction has been granted to Vodafone to prevent T-Mobile selling locked iPhones.
T-Mobile will also have to offer existing German iPhone customers the option to unlock the device free of charge so that it can be used with any SIM card – although that will effect some of the iPhone’s functions.
