UK iPhone launch a success?

Various retail outlets in the UK are claiming that the iPhone launch last Friday was a massive success, but how many were actually sold, and how many were activated?
The iPhone, which was launched in Apple Stores, O2 shops and the Carphone Warehouse on the 9th of November, has – according to a story in the Sunday Mirror – sold around 70,000 units already. The Times, on the other hand, claims a much more reserved ‘tens of thousands’ figure.
But this doesn’t seem to tie up with the activation figures quoted by O2, who said that they activated 8,000 iPhones during the mobile’s first day on sale.
Despite the relatively low activation figures though, that didn’t stop O2’s activation system crashing on a regular basis.
