Starbucks’ 50 million song giveaway

The Starbucks chain is giving away 50 million songs to promote its new iTunes wireless service, which starts in US coffee shops next month.
Starting at the beginning of October, the promotion will run for just over one month. Customers to selected shops (more than 10,000 of them) will receive a ‘Song of the Day’ card, which they can then use on the iTunes Store to claim their free track.
You won’t have full access to the iTunes Store’s library though, as the free tracks have been selected from a range of artists that include Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, KT Tunstall and Bob Dylan.
On the same day (2 October), Starbucks will also launch its ‘Now Playing’ service, where customers using an iPod touch or iPhone can buy the track that’s currently playing at their local Starbucks café.
‘Now Playing’ will initially launch in 600 cafes in New York, followed by 350 in San Francisco in November and 500 in Los Angeles in February 2008 – before a complete roll-out across America during 2008.
Apple haven’t revealed their plans for a worldwide launch of the service yet, but we suspect that many people will be able to wait a little bit longer to download Bob Dylan’s new album at a Starbucks café.
