MTV and Real combine for iTunes rival

The two companies officially announced yesterday that they are joining forces with a digital music download service from immediate effect.
Merging Real’s existing Rhapsody service with MTV’s URGE, this new online store will have the added advantage of allowing users to download music wirelessly to a mobile phone.
"It's like we've put the best lead singer, drummer and guitarist all on the same giant stage, allowing music fans to experience the purest music play in any way they want," said Van Toffler, President of MTV Networks Music & Logo Group. "The new Rhapsody will build on the musical curation of URGE and have the marketing power of MTV, VH1 and CMT behind it, ensuring this new platform is front and center in the hearts and minds of music lovers."
It’s a bold move from the two companies, but also a desperate one. Both Real and MTV can consider their previous download services (Rhapsody and URGE) to be relative failures, with neither one making a significant dent in Apple’s iTunes Store market share.
Could this be the signal that Apple needs to launch a new version of iTunes which includes wireless downloads? Let’s hope so.
