Considering that you’re dealing with a game here that features around 100 minute tiles, each one with a definite (and also minute) symbol on it, you’d imagine that trying to work out exactly what’s happening in Mahjong could be difficult. And hey, you’d be right.

If you’ve never played it before, the object of the game is to remove pairs of tiles sporting matching symbols, but the twist is that you can only remove ones that are completely free on one or more of their sides. There follows a tactical game of skill, as you work your way through the stack, carefully removing pairs and trying not to block yourself in before the layout’s completed.

The two game modes (Emperor’s Challenge – unlock different groups of layouts as you progress) and Pass ‘n Play (up to three players battle it out, one at a time) add some flavour to what’s a classic tactical game of skill, but we just found the screen too small to be useable and the control system only average at best.

Well, it’s Mahjong, isn’t it? Not a terrible conversion, but not a game that’s really suited to the iPod, either.

The above scores are for the number of Challenges completed.
Work your way through all 12 layouts in a theme and you’ll earn yourself a gem. Collect five gems to unlock the final set of layouts.
Make sure that you clear off the high tiles as soon as possible, as these are the ones that can hold you up more than any other.
You can use the Shuffle option (button at the top of the screen), but it does add a heavy time penalty onto your score.
The same goes for the Hint button too, so only try to use it if you’re really desperate.
The more layouts you clear, the higher your ranking gets. You start off as a lowly peasant, but you can eventually rise to the ranks of Emperor.
