News round-up: Friday, 16 November

Let’s all celebrate the fact that it’s Friday with a good portion of news, where we laugh (again) at Zune owners and think for a while about gaming on the iPhone…
Close, but not close enough The infamous Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal has reviewed the new Zune 2 player, and says that although there are a number of improvements and it’s closer to the iPod for style and useability than any other media player on the market, it’s still not quite good enough to tempt away the iPod faithful.
Summing up in his review, Mossberg says: “Microsoft has greatly improved the Zune hardware and software this time. But it seems to be competing with Apple’s last efforts, not its newest ones.” [Here]
3D games in development for iPhone… Well, sort of. The open source Conceptus game engine is being ported to the iPhone as we speak, which should herald the arrival of a steady stream of first-person shooters and RPGs.
Technically, we see no reason why some fairly impressive games couldn’t be ported across to the iPhone, as the mobile is certainly a lot more powerful than you may think – although it obviously doesn’t have a dedicated graphics chip.
All this is without the approval of Apple, but it’s safe to assume that any games created with Conceptus could be ported across to work with Apple’s SDK (Software Development Kit) when it’s released early next year. [Here]
…although don’t hold your breath for Quake John Carmack, the creator of some of the very best first-person shooters of all time (Doom, Quake) has recently said that Apple are not helping development of games on the iPhone – apparently he and Steve jobs had ‘a fairly heated argument’ about it at Apple’s 2007 Worldwide Developers Conference.
"I have an iPhone right now,” said Carmack, “and it's a platform I would enjoy developing for but Apple is not taking progressing steps in regards to gaming.” [Here]
