HD movies and rentals coming next week?

Another rumour concerning next Wednesday’s Apple event is that the company will also announce the availability of high definition movies through the iTunes Store.

This has been sparked by the news from Akamai, the service provider that hosts the majority of Apple’s downloadable content, that they are now able to offer a high-definition video service through their distribution network.

Many claim that Akamai’s announcement has been brought on by pressure from Apple to get the network up and running before Apple’s next Keynote speech on 5 September.

Rentals
Another story that refuses to go away is that Apple will also use the event to launch a movie rental service through iTunes.

One insider we spoke to claims that Jobs is about to announce downloadable movies for $2.99 that would be viewable for 30 days and playable on computers and one other device – an iPhone or an iPod, for example. Those with an Apple TV unit would obviously be able to stream the rentals through to their TV.

So high definition movies to rent for $2.99 and then watch on your new widescreen video iPod? There’s a lot to get excited about there…

If it's iPod-related and interesting, then we'll cover it
