20 lesser-known iPhone facts

With the release of the iPhone now only a day away, we’ve trawled through endless pages of information to bring you 20 things you probably didn’t know about it.

New ringtones
Apparently you can’t add new ringtones to the iPhone, so you’re stuck with the preset list of 25.

Battery
The battery, like the first iPods, is inbuilt, so you’ll need to send your iPhone back to Apple when it dies.

SIM
You can’t use other company’s SIM cards in the iPhone.

TV
Unlike the 5G iPod, the iPhone can’t play video through a TV.

Disc mode
There isn’t one on the iPhone, so don’t get rid of your iPod just yet.

Photos
You can’t text images to other mobile phones, although you are able to email them.

iPod
The iPod functions of the iPhone are great, but you can’t use them without activating the phone – so don’t even think of buying one just for the iPod abilities.

Works With iPhone
Apple have released a new ‘Works With iPhone’ stamp that appears on all iPod accessories that are inter-compatible, so check before you buy.

Speakerphone
There is a speakerphone option, but it is rather weak.

Vibrate mode
Again, there is one, but it’s more of a gentle ‘throb’ than something that’ll make your pocket shake – which is probably just as well.

Internet
All web pages display exactly as they would on a standard browser, but the iPhone doesn’t come with Flash, so animation and video don’t work…

YouTube
…with the exception of YouTube. Apple and Google are busily converting the YouTube library to work with iPhone and Apple TV.

Speed
Connect the iPhone to a wireless network and the Internet is fast and smooth. Connect via AT&T’s EDGE and it’s horribly slow – it’s reported that some pages take minutes to load.

Abroad
US iPhone users can take their iPhones abroad, but you have to set up International Roaming with AT&T and prepare yourself for a hefty bill.

Stylus
You can’t use one, as skin contact is required to operate the iPhone’s multi-touch screen.

Wireless
Before you ask, you aren’t able to use your iPhone as a wireless modem for your laptop computer.

Podcasts
You can sync podcasts (audio and video) from the iTunes Store. In fact, anything that you can buy or download from the store can be used on the iPhone – with the obvious exception of iPod games.

Games
They are coming apparently, but there’s nothing available at launch. EA, for example, are one company that say that they’re working on iPhone titles.

Camera
The quality of the 2 megapixel inbuilt camera is very good, although quality drops when you take pictures in darker locations.

Flash
There’s no flash function on the iPhone, but it’s surely only a matter of time before someone releases an add-on.
