Apple’s financial announcement reveals plenty

Apple announced their second quarter financial results yesterday, but there was plenty of interesting information revealed, too.
Firstly, Apple said that it shipped (which is obviously different to ‘sold’) 10.549 million iPods during the second quarter (January to March 2007), which is a 24 per cent increase over the same quarter last year.
It would also appear that sales of iPod accessories and items from the iTunes Store are in no sign of decline either, as Apple say that these sales are up 35 per cent.
Steve Jobs was obviously delighted, and hinted that there was plenty more from Apple just around the corner…
“We’re very excited about the upcoming launch of iPhone in late June,” said Jobs. “And are also hard at work on some other amazing new products in our pipeline.” From an iPod perspective, we suspect (like everyone else) that he’s talking about a nano with video playing capabilities and a new widescreen iPod, both of which are likely to be released before the end of this year.
After the results announcement, Apple’s CFO Peter Oppenheimer revealed what many of us suspected, that Apple is developing additional software features for the iPhone.
“We believe the iPhone is a revolutionary device that is years ahead of the competition,” he said. “We plan to build on this incredible foundation by continuing to develop new software features, as well as entirely new applications, and incorporate them into the iPhone. And since iPhone customers will likely be our best advocates for the product, we want to get them many of these new additional features and applications at no additional charge as they become available.”
So, to conclude, iPod sales are showing no signs of slowing down, iTunes Store sales are up and Apple are working on new product and software to increase the functionality of the iPhone (most of which will be free to the user).
