Amazon to launch rival to iTunes?

A report in the English newspaper The Telegraph claims that online retailers Amazon are preparing a rival service to the iTunes Store.
The newspaper claims that Amazon have been in talks with the four major record companies and will be ready to launch their service next month. Although it’s unlikely to be able to offer any content that won’t already be available through iTunes, it is rumoured that Amazon will be offering DRM-free tracks throughout.
Although Amazon dismissed the claims as ‘rumour and speculation’, they didn’t confirm or deny that they would be moving into the digital download market.
The report claims that Amazon could release the service as soon as next month.

Amazon have moved very successfully into the DVD market with a ‘DVD by post’ service, so digital downloads does seem to be the next logical step. And we’ve heard recently that the record companies are very keen for a serious rival to iTunes, as they feel unable to negotiate strongly with Apple as they own such a large slice of the market (around 80 per cent).
If Amazon can offer a cheaper service (possibly with a realistically priced subscription model) then Apple could finally have a serious rival service to deal with.
