New bill passes the ‘iPod tax’
James Oakwood
0 comments 24 April 2007
Dubbed the ‘iPod tax’, the Iowa Senate has approved a bill to impose sales tax on the sales of all digital downloads in the American state.
The bill’s creators believe that digital downloads should have the same tax rules as those that cover CDs, DVDs, etc. and believe that the tax could bring in $4.8 million every year.
But before you start to panic, the tax can only work on a voluntary basis, so the state would be relying on consumers’ honesty to send in the tax themselves.
