The album from Kate Walsh, the iTunes Free Single Of The Week artist a couple of weeks ago, recently hit the number one spot in the iTunes Store chart.
Not a particularly remarkable feat on its own, but Kate’s Album, Tim’s House, was recorded in her friend’s bedroom and released online without a record contract.
"You end up looking at it every day to see if you're still number one. I think I'm ahead of Elton,” said Walsh. "I don't actually have an iPod yet. I hear they are quite good for ten-hour flights.
The UK singer-songwriter built up a fan base by setting up a MySpace page and then hassled iTunes until they agreed to put her album on the Store.
"I set up my own record label called Blueberry Pie and just got the music out there. It's pretty easy. Anyone can do it,” she said.
To hear Kate’s music for yourself, you can preview her album (and buy it for just £4.74) here.
Or head to her MySpace page for four more tracks to listen to in full here.
