Invitations were sent out to journalists yesterday to meet at EMI’s London headquarters for a ‘digital offering’ announcement, with many pundits suggesting that, rather than this being used as a platform for the news that The Beatles are heading to iTunes, it’s more likely to be used to announce that EMI are to remove Digital Rights Management from a large part of their back catalogue.
The invitation also mentions a special guest, Apple’s Steve Jobs, and a live performance by an unannounced artist.
EMI have always been quick to show their allegiance to Apple, with their CEO, Eric Nicoli, trumpeting his love for the iPhone only recently, and the fact that the two Apple companies (Apple Inc and Apple Corp) recently settled their differences, could suggest that this could be a Beatles-related announcement. But sources and analysts claim otherwise. In a news story on the Reuters site, an alleged source states categorically that: “There is no Beatles announcement”.
