Apple release iTunes update

James Oakwood

With Apple TV almost here, Apple have released an update for iTunes to cater for it, but if you look underneath the hood, then you’ll find loads of other new features…

On the face of it, iTunes 7.1 looks identical to previous versions, but select the Cover Flow album display option and there’s an interesting new button in the bottom right-hand corner of the window. Click on this and you get a full-screen Cover Flow view, with options to skip through the albums, play, pause and skip the tracks, adjust the volume and return to the normal iTunes window.

Go to iTunes’ Preferences and you’ll also notice that there’s a new tab, Apple TV. When you eventually buy an Apple TV (which you surely will), it’ll appear in the window here. And if you’ve got more than one Apple TV (up to five can be synced through iTunes) then you can choose the one you want to connect to.

More interestingly for iTunes users outside of the US, is the fact that if you go to Parental controls (also in iTunes Preferences), then there’s a new pull-down menu for video ratings, which, alongside the United States, also includes Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and United Kingdom. Our sources have reassured us that movies will be heading to the UK iTunes Store soon, with May being the launch month that was mentioned.

Finally, Apple has added a Sorting function to iTunes’ Get Info function. This allows you to add extra information to tracks to change the order in which iTunes sorts them in topics such as Album and Artist.
