New York could get tough on iPod owners

Here’s a serious warning to all New Yorkers iPod-owners: There’s someone out there who wants to spoil your iPod-related fun…
Senator Carl Kruger of Brooklyn is hoping to introduce legislation that would ban people from listening to portable music devices – including iPods, mobiles phones and the three New Yorkers who own Zunes – while crossing the streets of New York.
Jason Joppel, the Chief of Staff in Kruger’s office, said that the legislation was brought about after three people were killed in the city crossing the street wearing headphones.
“The individuals were tuned into iPods and tuned out to the surroundings around them, and they stepped off the curb into the path of an oncoming bus or truck or car,” said Joppel. “In one case, people were screaming at the person to watch out, but the person couldn’t hear them because iPod [headphones] were in the person’s ears.”
If the legislation is passed, then offenders would be fined $100 for the offence.
