The man who gives away iPods
James Oakwood
0 comments 08 February 2007
Would you repair a broken iPod and then give it away for free? Maybe not, but one London man believes in spreading the iPod love without getting paid for it.
The Londonist website recently interviewed the man, Matthew Smith, who finds broken iPods on the Freecycle website and then repairs them, before putting them back onto the site and offering them up to the site’s eager community of freebie hunters.
“I started off with a broken iPod and needed to fix it somehow,” said Smith. “So I advertised on Freecycle for a couple of broken ones for spare parts, and mentioned in my advert that if I received more than I needed, and that I get my initial iPod working again, then I will use the spare parts to fix the others and would re-offer them back out into the community. I was inundated with replies from people saying what a great idea it was and lots of people donated to the cause. Then somehow it snowballed into what it is today!”
Freecycle, for those who haven’t found it yet, is a website that allows people to post items that they no longer require, so that other people can come and collect them for free. It’s the ultimate in recycling and, as it’s split up into thousands of regions around the world, there’s sure to be a group near you.
