Wal-Mart launch online movie store in the US

Wal-Mart, one of the biggest names in retailing in the US, has gone head-to-head with Apple in a bid to win a major slice of the download digital movie sector.
Wal-Mart’s store is offering films from all six of the major movie studios – Warner Brothers, Paramount, Sony, 20th Century Fox, Universal and Disney – as well as TV shows. The store has around 3,000 movies and shows at launch.
Although the store is only available in the US and isn’t compatible with iPod – all films are downloaded in Windows Media format – it’s still a blow for Apple, who have been hoping to sign up more companies for their own movie download service – currently they only stock films by Disney and Paramount.
When Apple announced back in the Autumn of 2006 that the iTunes Store would be selling movies, Wal-Mart was one of its strongest opponents, and now at least we can see why.
