Zune set to challenge nano

After reportedly weak sales figures over Christmas, Microsoft have realised that the real enemy in their MP3 war is to be found slightly lower down the ranks…
As reported on iPodNN, Microsoft used the Midem Music Expo in Cannes recently to announce that they’ll be releasing a Flash-based Zune player before the end of 2008 to go head-to-head with the iPod nano.
Obviously it’s far too early to have any firm specifications on the player, iPodNN predict that it’ll resemble Toshiba’s Gigabeat P MP3 player, but with the same WiFi capabilities as the larger Zune.
Call us fatalists if you like, but we have a strong hunch that this Zune will have exactly the same impact as its older brother – which, incidentally, one iPlay Collective reporter recently heard described as a ‘ugly brown bastard’.
To watch the YouTube video of Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer guffawing over Zune and rubbishing the iPhone, go here.
