Yoko Kanno 15.05.07 We’re new to the joys of Ms. Kanno, but this Japanese composer has been creating anime and game soundtracks for quite some time now. There are a few to choose from at the Aurgasm music blog, but our favourite has to be the acid jazz-tinged Tank! Charlotte Gainsbourg 04.05.07 A rather melancholic entry this week, as we bring you The Songs That We Sing from the Gallic beauty, Charlotte Gainsbourg, but that’s the kind of song we feel like listening to today. If you’re in a similar ‘okay, but rather thoughtful mood’, then you may well like it too. The Innocence Mission 13.04.07 A great band, with the perfect soundtrack for a summer full of lazing in fields, staring at the clouds and with nothing to do but lounge around wearing your iPod. Our favourite track from them is Into Brooklyn, Early In The Morning, but there’s more to download through this blog post. Groom 09.03.07 There’s more than a nod to the thigh-slipping, moonshine-swigging country roots of The White Stripes to Groom, and this rollicking track, Waking Up Before Her, is guaranteed to get your foot stomping. When you click on the link above, scroll down the page until you reach the archive for the 23 February and you’ll find the song here. Stephanie Dosen 09.02.07 Just signed to the Bella Union label, Stephanie Dosen is a stunning artist that will, hopefully, be heard now by a much larger audience. Sounding like a glorious mixture of Sinead O’Connor and The Sundays, you can now download the haunting track Somerset from the above link. Kortez 12.12.06 There are three tracks to download on Kortez’s site, including the very excellent Years Of Living Dangerously – you can even download CD artwork. And if you live in the southwest of England, try to catch them live, too. Tarkio 12.12.06 Sadly, this American band split up in the late ’90s, but we found a song of theirs online called Tristan and Iseult and felt that we had to post the link here. A lovely song for a Sunday morning with a bad hangover. Tender Trap 12.12.06 With comparisons to Blondie and The Magnetic Fields you’d expect Tender Trap to be an interesting band, and we’re happy to report that the song available here (That Girl) starts well and becomes dangerously infectious within moments. The Early Years 12.12.06 The Early Years sound like The Editors would dearly love to, and have perfected the raw early Factory Records sound better than anyone. Click on the link above and type ‘The Early Years’ into the search bar. Then look out for their album in 2007. The Morning After Girls 12.12.06 Download two songs from this band’s website and see for yourself if the comparisons to Primal Scream and The Pixies are justified. We think that they are (just), but this Australian band still manage to sound fresh and exciting. The Lackloves 12.12.06 If you like jangly guitars and melodic riffs, then you’re sure to like Still Missing You from The Lackloves. While some Sixties-influenced guitar bands can sound fey and limp, this band manage to have the skill and talent to rise above them. Matthew Friedberger 12.12.06 We’re big fans of Friedberger in the iPlay Collective office, and although his unique sound certainly isn’t to everyone’s tastes, we guarantee that it’s impossible not to listen to when you first hear it. Click the link for two songs. The Elected 12.12.06 The Elected are fronted by the guitarist from Rilo Kiley, and they’re equally matched to that underrated band. Infectious tunes are complimented by catchy melodies, making us hope that we’ll hear a lot more from this four-piece from California. Urbs 12.12.06 Hailing from Austria, the DJ Paul Nawrata has a style that’s relatively unique in the hip-hop world, as he mixes film scores with sound effects to create a timeless soundtrack that’s sure to appeal to anyone who’s ever enjoyed Portishead. Cary Ann Hearst 12.12.06 A unique sound that comes from the darkest depths of Mississippi, Hearst is a talent waiting to happen. You can download three tracks from her website, including the title track to her first album, Dust And Bones. Dr Wingbutter 12.12.06 With a name like that, it’s a physical and mental impossibility to ignore this band. Although the music might not quite match up to the band’s moniker, it’s still loungefunk as it’s meant to be played… which is quite oddly. Stereogum 12.12.06 A fantastic message board for music fans. Loads of gossip and opinion, but also loads of MP3 links, too – just head to their Bands To Watch section. The language can be a bit fruity though, so watch out for all the ‘effing and jeffing’. 3hive 12.12.06 Another one of the better MP3 blogs out there, you’ll find everything from A Girl Called Eddy to Zooey and hundreds of bands in-between. Hang out here for a couple of hours and we promise you’ll find something you like. Epitonic 12.12.06 Squeezing into our New Music category is the fabulous Epitonic website. A stunning database of the finest music around, this is another site that it’s so easy to lose yourself in.
