Namco’s Vice-President speaks out on iPod gaming

The games website Gaming Bits has an exclusive and very interesting interview with Scott Rubin, the VP of Namco Networks/Games. Here are some highlights…
Namco are rightly regarded as one of the founding fathers of the coin-op revolution, creating some of the greatest games for both the arcades and home conversions. Now though, all talk is of mobile gaming, and Namco have been quick to port some of their classics to mobile phones and also the iPod.
Gaming Bits sat down with the Vice-President of their mobile division to ask about developing for the iPod, and also to find out the company’s future plans.
The overall tone of the interview was very positive, with Rubin quoted as saying that Namco’s relationship with Apple was very strong. “It's been great, he said. “They're a very, very good partner. iPod is the perfect device for games because of the mass market appeal and that everyone uses them for entertainment. So to go from music to video to games as the next extension makes complete sense.”
When asked about the iPhone, Rubin said: “We’re one of the handful of game publishers that Apple has chosen to work with and we're also a top partner of Cingular, who will be selling the device… If the opportunity is there, we will put our games on the iPhone. It's our mission.”
“We're definitely exploring or are in development of other titles, but we just haven't announced them yet,” said Rubin when asked about future Namco releases for iPod. “But one of the things we are looking at is which ones lends themselves well to the platform. The only limitation to think about is the controls. We want to make sure the consumer experience is a great one.”
