All the software for both PC and Mac that's designed to make the iPod and iTunes experience even better
The largest collection of iPod-related links in the world

AutoRate (Mac)

29.06.07
We all agree that adding ratings to tracks is a useful feature in iTunes, but it’s also a time-consuming process. Not any more, as AutoRate is a small iTunes plug-in that automatically rates your iTunes library based on how many times you’ve listened to each song.

Moody (Mac)

21.05.07
There have been a couple of good automatic playlist generators released for iTunes recently, but Moody has to be one of the best, as it makes perfect playlists for you depending on your mood. Click on the link for more details.

iPod Access Photo (Mac/PC)

04.05.07
If you have a need to move images from your iPod to a computer, then this might well be the program to help you, as it’ll convert photos from the iPod’s ‘ithmb’ format to one that will allow you to view them on regular photo programs.

Soundcrank (PC)

27.04.07
At its heart, Soundcrank is an iTunes extension that finds and installs song lyrics, but in true ‘social’ style, it also enables you to create your own ‘My Music’ page on its website, which allows other users to see what you’re listening to.

ZappTek

13.04.07
This US-based shareware company has a range of products available, including iSpeak It, iPresent It, iPDA and iPod Launcher. You need to pay for the full versions, but there are trials available to download for free.

The Filter (Mac/PC)

02.03.07
The Filter is an iTunes plug-in that automatically creates playlists for you based on a couple of songs you highlight. Quicker and easier than Smart Playlists, it’s not quite as thorough, but great fun when you want a playlist in a hurry. There’s a Mac version in the pipeline and you can head to The Filter’s site to sign up for Beta testing.

Peel (Mac)

23.02.07
Now this is genius. Peel is a shareware application (currently on a Beta version and also free) that finds the latest free MP3s from music blogs and lists them through the software. Then, at your leisure, you can play them through the software, and when you find something you like, download it to iTunes. Pure class.

iConcertCal (Mac/PC)

02.02.07
This genius little (and free) iTunes plug-in adds a calendar to iTunes and searches through your music library to find out which of your favourite bands are playing in your area. Sadly though, it only works in the US at present

iPod EBook Maker (PC)

12.12.06
If you’ve got a large text file that you want to drop into your iPod’s Note folder, then EBook Maker is the ideal piece of software, as it’ll divide your file up into separate chapters and even add next and previous page links, too.

Audacity (Mac/PC)

12.12.06
If you’re looking for cheap (ie, free) video editing software that’ll work on both PC and Mac then this is the one for you. You can record audio from an external source or even splice, crop or distort any track in your library.

XPlay 2 (PC)

12.12.06
If you want to transfer your iPod library to your computer for whatever reason (don’t worry, we don’t ask questions), then you need an easy-to-use and powerful piece of software to do it. Thankfully, XPlay 2 is one of the best you’ll find.

iSquint (Mac)

12.12.06
iSquint is a Mac programme that converts video files to an iPod-friendly format, and we really can’t say enough nice things about it. Unlike a lot of similar programmes, the quality of the converted video is absolutely spot-on, too.

iPod Access (Mac)

12.12.06
This is another one of those wonderful pieces of shareware that takes a potentially brain-taxing job (in this case, transferring items from your iPod library to your Mac) and makes it incredibly simple.

Videora (PC)

12.12.06
If you need to convert a video to an iPod-compatible format on the PC, then you need Videora, as (oddly) there’s not an awful lot of choice. It’s tricky to use and a lot of people have issues with it, but it’s free and works fine if you’re patient.

iLingo (Mac/PC)

12.12.06
Just let iLingo know what you want to do and it’ll then happily translate it into a European or Asian dialect and then have it spoken to you by a native speaker of the language. There’s a 65-phrase English-to-Japanese trail to download for free.

Pocket Vegan (Mac/PC)

12.12.06
Containing over 250 vegan recipes, Pocket Vegan is an ingenious program that is stored in your iPod’s Notes folder, and is perfect for those (very) odd moments when you find yourself somewhere without a cookbook and in need of a vegan recipe.

iWriter (Mac/PC)

12.12.06
If you want to create your own text-based games, quizzes or multiple-choice tests for your iPod, then you can through iWriter. Get creative and then import your work of genius into your iPod’s Notes folder.

iDirectionz (PC)

12.12.06
This is a very basic piece of software that allows you to input a start and finish address and it’ll work out a simple route for you, which you then transfer to your iPod. This is great, especially if you decided to buy an iPod rather than a sat nav.
