Tetris is officially one of the most addictive games ever devised and is surely the perfect game for the iPod format. Well, not quite, but it’s not that far off. Start playing a game and the familiarity soon envelopes you, like a warm and comfortable coat of nostalgia.

There are three game modes to pick from: Marathon, 40 Lines and Ultra. Marathon is your traditional Tetris game, where you have to clear the lines as the speed increases; 40 Lines is what you’d expect, as you need to clear 40 lines in the fastest time possible; Ultra gives you three minutes to rack up the highest score you can.

It’s difficult to mess up Tetris as it’s such a simple concept, but it does have to be said that the Click wheel isn’t the ideal control system. Also, a poorly mapped control setup means that you often send a block crashing down the screen when you just meant to speed it up. That said, Tetris on the iPod is still as maddeningly addictive as ever, and the extra game modes only go to enhance its longevity.

We have some minor control issues, but they don’t dampen what is still an absolute class game.

Try to clear four rows at once to get a ‘Tetris’ move and earn yourself a load of bonus points.
To make things easier, you’re shown the next three blocks heading your way, giving you plenty of time to plan your strategy.
Take your time. Even if you know where you’re about to put your current block, try to work out where the next one’s going, too.
