EVENT: iPhone announced for UK

Dean Mortlock
0 comments  18 September 2007

As widely predicted, Apple used the live event at their Regent Street store to reveal details of the UK release plans for iPhone – and here are the facts.

Carrier
No surprises here, as O2 have been given the honours of carrying the iPhone in the UK. The phone will be sold through Apple and O2 stores and also through Carphone Warehouse.

O2’s CEO, Matthew Key, was brought on-stage to say a few words and said, “Within a few minutes of playing with an iPhone I knew it was a breakthrough product.”

Release date
We were hoping that it would be an instant release, but sadly no. The iPhone will launch in the UK on 9 November.

Price
Currently it appears that the iPhone will come as just an 8GB model and will cost £269 – the same price at the 16GB iPod touch.

Contract
The O2 contract runs for 18 months and, thankfully, you’re able to transfer existing numbers to your iPhone.

Plans
The plans cost £35, 45 and £55 and all come with unlimited EDGE data and visual voicemail…

£35
200 inclusive minutes
200 inclusive SMS
Unlimited data and WiFi

£45
600 inclusive minutes
500 inclusive SMS
Unlimited data and WiFi

£55
1200 inclusive minutes
500 inclusive SMS
Unlimited data and WiFi

WiFi hotspots
Apple have done a deal to give UK iPhone users access to 7,500 WiFi hotspots around the UK. Part of O2’s ‘The Cloud’, it’ll come as part of the O2 tariff.

iPlay comment
Well, the iPhone is finally here… almost. The cost seems about right and the plans are what we expected. Any initial worries about Apple going with O2 should be softened by the fact that the iPhone will be able to link up to The Cloud’s massive amount of WiFi hotspots for no extra cost. Ideally we’d loved to have seen a 16GB model and have it to buy today, but the best things in life are always worth waiting for…

If it's iPod-related and interesting, then we'll cover it
