We remember playing Bluetooth Mini Golf on our old Sony Ericsson phones for far longer than men of our age should ever do, so it’d be fair to say that Electronic Arts’ Mini Golf was one of the few iPod games we were genuinely excited about playing. Unfortunately though, the misty-eyed nostalgia we started with was soon replaced by a glazed look of boredom and a gnawing feeling of regret.
Maybe we’re exceptional gamers and the challenge of modern games is nothing to our honed skills, but we breezed through all three courses in Mini Golf on our first go (get Par or under on the first course and you unlock the next one, etc.). The holes are very short and mostly Par 2, so there’s little scope for originality or ingenious puzzles. Instead it’s mostly a case of navigating the odd slope, working out an angle to get around a junction or avoiding snakes.
You place the ball, hit a couple of shots, sink it and then you’re on to the next hole. We struggled with two or possibly three holes on all three courses and started to get bored by the time we were halfway through the third set of holes.
If you’re a massive fan of mobile golf games (of which there are many), yet have found them to be overly difficult and challenging, then this could be your perfect game. For the rest of us though, boredom sneaks in long before we’ve reached the clubhouse.

Golf has long been a popular game on the mobile format, but this iPod version is lacking depth and any sort of challenge. |

The above high scores are the 'under par' totals for the first course, Tommy Totem's Tiki Putt Putt. |

If you press the Centre button after you’ve taken a shot then you instantly jump forward to the position for your next shot. |

If you’re having difficulties with specific holes, then head to the practice mode and perfect it there. |

Don’t rush your shot, as you’ll often notice a sneaky shortcut or obstacle if you take the time to examine the hole properly. |

The key to success in Mini Golf is getting the angle right and then remembering it for the next time to avoid high scores on those tricky holes. |
