Bejeweled is another conversion for the iPod of a well-known mobile phone game. Taking a bit more than a leaf (maybe a whole branch?) out of the classic puzzle game book, Bejeweled takes elements of games like Tetris and Sega’s Columns to create a slow moving but mildly diverting game.
The object is to raise the Score Bar on the left side of the screen and you do this by matching three or more of the same type of gem. If you’re lucky enough to get a combo going, then you’ll raise the bar faster. Matching the gems is simply a case of moving a gem in either of the four main directions so that it’s forced to line up with two more.
To be honest, Bejeweled is nothing special. Despite the fact that it comes to us triumphant from the mobile phone world (or perhaps because of), the pace of the game rarely rises above what it initially sets and the overall experience is a little flat. And when you compare this to games like Zuma and Tetris, then there really is no competition.

A run-of-the-mill puzzler that does little to excite or entertain. |

If you knock out a block of three gems at the bottom of the screen then you allow more to move down, thereby increasing your chance of a combo. |

Look around the screen before making a move and try to predict how the gems will fall. If you can link two or three combos together then you’ll earn a much higher score. |
