We’ll put our hands up and happily admit that we’ve always been huge fans of Pac-Man and that it was the first game we downloaded from the iTunes Store. Sadly though, that’s when our fanboy love of the arcade classic started to wilt slightly, as Pac-Man on the iPod is a real stinker.

On first impressions everything seems intact, and so it should be. After all, Pac-Man is hardly the most challenging conversion for the iPod’s mighty processor. The look, sound and feel of the game are spot on, and they’ve even included the small cut-scenes between the levels.

The problems start though, when you actually start to play a game, as the scroll wheel is obviously no substitute for a responsive joystick, and if there’s any game that needs quick nerves and a 100% accurate control system, then it’s Pac-Man. So, rather than a responsive action when you want to change direction, you’re forced into having to ‘stroke’ the wheel and hope that it’s the right spot.

Such a bad idea for a conversion that even hardcore Pac-Man fans like us can’t be bothered to play it.

It’s very easy to get stuck in a corner, so try to keep out in the open and only go for the corner pills when there are no ghosts nearby.
The teleporter is another great way of getting out of trouble, so head there if you’ve got a couple of ghosts on your tail.
Try not to eat the power pellets until there’s a group of ghosts nearby, as the effect doesn’t last very long.
Always try to get the fruit that appears in the middle of the maze, as these bonuses are worth plenty of points.
Just so you know, each maze has two items of fruit and some of the better ones can earn you up to 5000 points (the key).
Try to eat as many pills before you eat a power pellet, as it’ll make it much easier to finish the stage.
