Top iPod tips – part 2

  step 1 Battery performance

If your iPod’s battery isn’t lasting as long as you’d like, then it might be worth changing your listening habits. For example, listening to higher quality songs (recorded with a 192kbps bitrate or above) or audio books (9Mb or more) drains it quicker, as does leaving on the backlight, clicker or the Equalizer. For the best battery performance, we recommend switching off all of these.
  step 2 Notes

The Notes feature on your iPod is one that you may well have ignored up until now, but it’s well worth investigating, as there are now so many files you can import and use. If you head to the Masterclass section of the site, then you’ll find all you need to get you started in our in-depth feature.
  step 3 Combination lock

In a similar way to the Screen Lock, you can now enter a combination to ensure that no one else can alter the limit you want to put on your iPod’s volume. Remember though, that the volume of imported songs can vary greatly and different types of headphones can also affect the loudness, too.
  step 4 Radio remote signal

If you’re struggling to get a signal on your iPod Radio Remote, try moving the unit around until it improves – you can save the station’s position by pressing down the Centre button. Also, if you’re not picking up a signal, check in your iPod’s settings that the radio is set to the UK – the default is the US.
  step 5 Enable disc use

One of the best things about the iPod is that you can use it as an external hard drive to move files around – we also have an archive of our text documents on ours. Most of you will already know this, but for those yet to try it, all you have to do is connect your iPod to your computer, go to iTunes’ preferences, click on the iPod tab and then tick on ‘Enable Disc Use’.
  step 6 Firmware update

If you’re convinced that your iPod isn’t working as well as it should, then it might be worth checking that you’re running the latest firmware software for it. Go to Software Update and see if there’s a newer version. PC users can either go to Help > Check for Updates or look on the main iPod Summary page when you connect it to iTunes.
