What’s the difference between the MPEG-4 and H.264 video formats?

Quite a lot. Just as you have AAC and MP3 audio formats, there are two differing ways you can convert and store your video files – one being the traditional format and the other being a more superior update. The MPEG-4 video codec has been around for nearly 10 years and now it’s starting to show its age a bit. The H.264 one (or, if you prefer, MPEG-10) is much newer and offers better quality video for less memory size. The downside though, is that conversion takes far longer – anything up to 10-15 times. If you interested in seeing exactly how the two formats compare, we suggest you go here, as someone’s carefully converted the same clip using both MPEG-4 and H.264 codecs, and also over a selection of quality settings.
